What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living communities or assisted living facilities (ALFs) help promote health, safety and well-being among the senior residents that live there. These communities were created as an alternative type of senior housing. They provide housing, health care and personal care services to seniors in need of assistance with activities of daily living. They also provide a more independent environment than a classic nursing home.
Types of Assisted Living Facilities
When comparing ALFs, you’ll find a wide variety in the level of care that may be provided. Some AFLs specialize in providing a supportive and safe environment for seniors who are largely independent. Seniors living in these AFLs may need minor periodic assistance with activities of daily living or medication oversight.
Other assisted living providers offer services specifically for the very frail elderly who need a very high level of assistance on a daily basis. These AFLs have become a substitute for classic nursing homes. They often provide many, though not all, of the same care services as a skilled nursing facility.
When you are comparing AFLs, it is important to know what type of environment each community caters to. This ensures your loved one will be most comfortable in their new community.
